Two Taunton Deane schools celebrate a successful year of Raising Aspirations

Raising Aspirations is a ground-breaking mentoring project launched by Somerset Community Foundation in 2011 at Crispin School in Street.  Last year, with the support of Taunton Deane Borough Council, the scheme was expanded to Court Fields School in Wellington and The Taunton Academy. The first pupils and mentors to take part in Raising Aspirations at those schools enjoyed tea parties this month to celebrate a successful academic year of mentoring. Staff, mentors and students reflected on the benefits of the scheme, and it is fantastic to hear some of the teachers are already noticing a positive impact on their charges after the sessions.  

SCF are partnering with researchers from the University of the West of England to evaluate the impact of the programme, and we are pleased to report mentees have benefitted from increased confidence and self-esteem with the support of their mentor. One Raising Aspirations mentee from Crispin school said "Mentoring has been a life changing experience. It has moulded us into confident people. Thank you".

An ideal Raising Aspirations mentor has life experience to share, patience, and a sense of humour, and is committed to supporting the next generation of young people to succeed. On average, mentors commit to one session a month supporting their mentee and appointments are arranged at a mutually convenient time.
